Week 22: the spaghetti squash

Good Morning!

So - I think the babycenter.com is getting a little gourmet on me. Spaghetti squash? I feel like the challenger on Iron Chef America getting the secret ingredient. In any case - things are going great here in Portland. We ordered the furniture for the babies room and I think over the 4th of July holiday we will be painting. Baby girl is already taking Jeff and wrapping him around her little finger - per Jeff's request, our little girl will be having a pink bedroom. At least until she comes home one day and announces she "hates the color pink" (which is exactly what I did).

Till next time!

How your baby's growing:
At 11 inches (the length of a spaghetti squash) and almost 1 pound, your baby is starting to look like a miniature newborn. Her lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and she's even developing tiny tooth buds beneath her gums. Her eyes have formed, but her irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment. If you could see inside your womb, you'd be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers her body and the deep wrinkles on her skin, which she'll sport until he adds a padding of fat to fill them in. Inside her belly, her pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.

Week 21: The Carrot

Good Morning!

I went to the doctor on Wednesday - the ultrasound read perfectly, baby girl is growing right on schedule, so as of now they are not changing my due date. Still October 30th! Other than my horrible allergies, things are going great. Oh - finding that perfect sleeping position has proven to be difficult - although it could be the large body pillow, a very clingy cat that insists on sleeping with us along with Jeff and me in a queen size bed that is part of the problem... we are the three bears in the bed, ROLL OVER, I'M CROWDED!

Anyway.... here's the update on our little carrot.

Love,
Amanda and Jeff

How your baby's growing:
Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long — the length of a carrot. You may soon feel like she's practicing martial arts as her initial fluttering movements turn into full-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also discover a pattern to her activity as you get to know her better. In other developments, your baby's eyebrows and lids are present now, and if you're having a girl, her vagina has begun to form as well.

Week 20: The Banana

Hello Family and Friends -

Last week I got a couple of comments regarding our daughter's name. At this point, no - Vesper (my maternal grandmother's name) is not on the list... Vesper Amato? Doesn't ring any bells (sorry Gram). I can only hope she inherits another one of her traits - okay, maybe not feeding a family of raccoons out the back of our house - but I'd go with piano playing, or some scratchy violin music.

In any case - I'm including the 5 month bump picture - as you can see we are both definitely growing. I'm feeling her kick quite a bit these days, although so far Jeff has not been able to - partly because he's lacking in patience, partly because she really hasn't shown her leg power just yet for Daddy.

Till next time!

Amanda

How your baby's growing:
Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. She's also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — the length of a banana. (For the first 20 weeks, when a baby's legs are curled up against her torso and hard to measure, measurements are taken from the top of her head to her bottom — the "crown to rump" measurement. After 20 weeks, she's measured from head to toe.)

She's swallowing more these days, which is good practice for her digestive system. She's also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate in her bowels, and you'll see it in her first soiled diaper (some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery). (Ummm - a little TMI here people!!!)

Week 19: the heirloom tomato

Good Morning!

Welcome to everyone to our official BABY GIRL Amato blog! ;-) Now that we've had a week to get used to the idea that we are in fact having a daughter (Although, I think Jeff is a little disappointed at not getting to quote the Godfather about our first child, being a masculine child) we are getting pretty excited! Now the great debate starts - paint colors and names. Who knew we were going to be both so opinionated on the topic?? Okay... for those that know both of us that can't seem like a shock at all... in any case... here is the scoop!

How your baby's growing:
Your baby's sensory development is exploding! Her brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch. Some research suggests that she may be able to hear your voice now, so don't be shy about reading aloud, taking to her, or singing a happy tune if the mood strikes you.

Your baby weighs about 8 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches, head to bottom —about the size of a large heirloom tomato. Her arms and legs are in the right proportions to each other and the rest of her body now. Her kidneys continue to make urine and the hair on her scalp is sprouting. A waxy protective coating called the vernix caseosa is forming on her skin to prevent it from pickling in the amniotic fluid.
